Chapter 10

“You see,” he continued after a telling pause for dramatic effect, “I’m interested in something you have that belongs to me.”

I frowned, completely lost. He answered with a grin, then motioned at Split-Face to stay back and sit down on the sofa.

“Please, have a seat.” He gestured at two armchairs awkwardly sitting cattycorner to the desk, one on each side.

“I’d rather stand,” I said, still frowning.

“Sit,” he insisted.

“Fine.” I perched myself on the edge of the brothel-red chair. Crowley took the one across from me and slid off the bat into a cool, comfortable position, ankle on knee, elbows on armrest, fingers linked loosely over his stomach.

The man kept ignoring him and fixed his gaze on me.

“I’m a businessman,” he said. “The bottom line is important to me. Still, as I said before, I’m pleased to make your acquaintance. Welcome to Italy.” He laughed, clearly thinking himself funny.

I grunted. “Can’t say I feel the same. You drugged us and hired some—” I looked back at Split-Face, “—thugs to bring us here against our will.”

The beast looked like he was rearing to pounce on me, but he stayed put. Interesting how he seemed afraid of his employer, Napoleon Bonaparte. Size didn’t matter sometimes.

“Come now. You’re exaggerating un pochino. Right?” He brought his thumb and index finger close to stress his reference to a ‘little’ exaggeration. “Did my men treat you so badly? I asked them to be gentle.”

Condescending prick.

He stared daggers at his lackey, as though the man had gone counter to his orders by … following his orders. Split-Face sank in this seat, doing his utmost to blend into the fabric.

“I’m not embellishing, as you say. I’m also in a hurry. I have plans.”

“Ah, yes, to meet with Signor Vianetti.” Gollum’s ugly brother narrowed his eyes on me. I really had to decide on one nickname for him; so far, they all felt right. “That’s why you’re here, in fact.”

He sat down and linked his hands on the desk in front of him, trying his damnedest to appear like a man about to get to business. The chair was high enough to make him visible up to the underarms. “Signor Vianetti is holding something that belongs to us … for you.”

“As far as I know, my inheritance belongs to me. Vianetti made it clear it comes from my relative. I don’t see what the fuss is about. What the hell’s wrong with people?”

I crossed my arms over my chest and huffed like a four-year-old in the throes of a tantrum. Seriously though, this stupid affair had skipped beyond the boundary of ridiculous. A box full of old notes and possibly personal mementos—how could that be interesting to anybody but family in this decade? Unless…

Calming myself down, I continued, “Did you send the man to break into Vianetti’s office and search it?”

Benocchi’s turn to frown. “What are you talking about, signorina? Inheritance? I really don’t understand what you mean.”

“When I arrived for my appointment at the lawyer’s office, your man was in there, looking through stuff.
